Wassailing day
This ancient tradition is still upheld throughout England and Wales, but particularly so in the west country, the home of cider.
January 17th, old Twelfth Night is the traditional date for wassailing and although ceremonies and songs such as the one below vary slightly from orchard to orchard they run along similar lines. A number of old Wassail songs can be found in the 'Calendar of Somerset Customs' in North Somerset Local Studies Library in Weston.

Bristol Channel Floods
The Bristol Channel floods, which occurred on 30 January 1607 (New style), resulted in the drowning of a large number of people and the destruction of a large amount of farmland and livestock.
Research has suggested that the cause may have been a tsunami. For ten days the Church of All Saints at Kingston Seymour, near Weston-super-Mare, was filled with water to a depth of 5 feet (1.5 m). A chiselled mark remains showing that the maximum height of the water was 7.74 metres above sea level

The School of Art opened in Weston-super-Mare
This was the predecessor to the current Weston College. It was run by the government's Department of Science and Art, and opened with the aid of 40 pounds collected from local residents.
For the first year the Principal was the only teacher and around 80 students attended the six classes held weekly.

The North Somerset coast was battered by a huge storm
A deep weather depression coincided with high spring tides and this resulted in winds of 80mph and mountainous seas.
Defences along the Somerset coast were breached, the surge swept up the Severn Estuary and low-lying areas were flooded with salt water. Steep Holm's ferry The Weston Lady was wrecked at Weston-super-Mare.

Marconi and his team successfully transmitted a messages via radio between Lavernock Point in South Wales and Brean Down
The world's first radio transmission across water was made from Flat Holm to Lavernock Point in south Wales by Guglielmo Marconi on 13th May 1897.
The experiment was so successful that Marconi's men chose to relocate the Flat Holm equipment across the Bristol Channel, to Brean Down Fort near Weston Super Mare. They managed to transmit messages for a distance of nearly 10 miles, proving that the technology was viable and useful.

Clevedon Pier officially re-opened
On 23rd May 1998, Clevedon pier was formally re-opened by Sir Charles Elton Bart and Clevedon Bowler David Bryant. Sir Charles Elton is the great-great grandson of the original chairman of the Clevedon Pier Company.
Thousands of people came to witness the occasion, again many dressed in Victorian period costume. The celebrations included the Royal Marine marching band, an air-sea rescue display, aerobatic display teams, 'wing-walking' and trips on the paddle steamer Waverley. Local Clevedon company, Firemagic, finished the day with an amazing display of fireworks using the whole length of the pier.

Oak Apple Day
Supposedly the day when Charles II hid in an oak tree. It was quite a common custom to place boughs of oak around the doors of inns and other buildings.
Many people in the West Country also practiced wearing a sprig of oak on the day. More details and description of these customs in the ' Calendar of Somerset Customs' - copy available in the N S Local Studies Library in Weston-super-Mare

Letting the Puxton Dolmoors
An ancient custom, observed in olden times in the county of Somerset, where land was allocated out.
Two large pieces of land between Congresbury, Puxton and Wick St. Lawrence, called East and West Dolmoors, was decided each year by way of a kind of lottery held before Midsummer Day. Luftwaffe mistake landing at Lulsgate Bottom
An emergency aircraft landing ground was created on 14 acres belonging to Corner Pool Farm by the A38 in March 1940, and the runway was improved in 1941.
Early in the morning of the 14th July of that year the newly completed runway at RAF Lulsgate Bottom was first used by a Luftwaffe JU88 landing by mistake thinking they were in France.

Author of Rock of Ages hymn dies
Augustus Montague Toplady was curate of Blagdon from 1762-64. Toplady wrote his famous hymn "Rock of Ages" in 1763.
A local tradition discounted by most historians holds that he wrote the hymn after seeking shelter under a large rock at Burrington Combe.

Steep Holm inn owner in court
Frederick Harris, whose family had run an inn on Steep Holm since 1846, appeared before Axbridge Magistrates' Court charged with selling liquor without a licence.
He argued that Steep Holm was not part of Somerset and initially won his case. However the Inland Revenue took the case to the Court of Appeal and the decision was reversed in their favour. More detail can be found in 'The Steep Holm Guide: The History of the Island off Weston-super-Mare' by Rodney Legg, 1995

Local artist Alfred Leete's 'Lord Kitchener' poster first appeared on the cover of London Opinion magazine
Lord Kitchener Wants You was a 1914 advertisement which was developed into a recruitment poster. It depicted Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War, above the words "WANTS YOU".
Kitchener, wearing the cap of a British Field Marshal, stares and points at the viewer calling them to enlist in the British Army against the Central Powers. The image is considered one of the most iconic and enduring images of the war. A hugely influential image and slogan, it has also inspired imitations in other countries, from the United States to the Soviet Union.
